Connie Hatch’s calm, focused. After a long first day back at work she stepped through her doorway right at dusk. As the dean of students at a middle school, her hands are full every day. The heat index is 102. Cold air from the inside is a welcome. She sat comfortably on her couch with a cool linen pant suit on. You would think Ms. Hatch would be worried, pacing the floor. Sometimes when people go through troubling situations they break down, panic and lose the things they do have going right for them.
“I read my bible and pray a lot. I hardly look at the news,” said Ms. Hatch. “I just distract that from my mind. I read my bible and go to grad school at night. I make sure all my grandkids are in school and do the best that I can.”
Heavy Burdens
She’s currently going through one of the toughest times in her 57 years of life.
Her son, Torrance Hatch, rapper Lil Boosie is on 23-hour lock down in the infamous Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola. He’s facing a first-degree murder charge. If convicted, he could face the death penalty on charges stemming from the October 2009 murder of Terry Boyd.
While the rapper sits behind bars, the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s office is investigating five other murders to see if they link to Boosie. It’s alleged that he hired Michael “Marlo Mike” Louding who was only 16-years-old at the time as a hit man to do the killings.
To add to his rap sheet, on May 25th, The Advocate reported that Boosie was accused of trying to get codeine into the prison by state police. He is serving time on an unrelated drug charge, the paper reported.
“He and I talked about it. The lawyers talked about it. He’s saying that it was a set up,” said Ms. Hatch. “Now the lawyers have this case in their hands. I really don’t know if it will hurt his case.”
Pictures of Boosie and his children line her living room walls. A poster size framed picture of Boosie with four of his kids sat on the floor. In them, he looks like Torrance Hatch, the man. A father of seven with a genuine smile on his face that only holding his kids on his lap can give him. He doesn’t look like Boosie, the blinged-out gangster rapper.
